You have hit the nail on the head again. There is nothing admirable about a fool’s attempt to be foolish. There should be moral outrage at what Obama is doing to the economy. The real suffering is coming over the hill top and we are applauding Obama for doing the wrong things for what he says are the right reasons. I doubt both; he is wrong and he knows it and it has been his plan all along.

Paying taxes becomes an excuse for ignoring truly valid moral considerations. I paid my taxes is a poor substitute for true morality as a the basis for social relationships. The taxes that go into the welfare state also cripple the resources available to support valid moral actions. The final problem is the impersonal bureaucratic application of one-size-fits-all policy to unique individual circumstances. Where is the intimacy, familiarity, support, empathy, and humanity that bind a community together in actions of the state?

I find that the trouble with virtue ethics is that you typically can’t rank the virtues; or at least, the higher the rank, the less descriptive the virtue. For instance, magnanimity is the king of the virtues, yet you can’t understand what magnanimity is without understanding the other virtues. Also, as Aristotle says, righteousness is doing the right thing, at the right time, in the right place, for the right reasons. This would imply that it would be impossible to rank the virtues, since that would negate the need for different action at different times.
